Diabetes Shoppe
Diabetes is a disease including three disorders in which abnormally high blood sugar levels (glucose) are present:
- Gestational Diabetes, sometimes occurring during pregnancy.
- Type 1 Diabetes, most often triggered during childhood, in which the pancreas stops making insulin.
- Type 2 Diabetes, usually occurring in obese adults and children (Body Mass Index of 30 or greater) when the body’s cells develop a resistance to the absorption of insulin.
Insulin enables your cells to convert blood sugar (glucose) into energy. Over time, elevated blood glucose causes nonreversible damage to vision, blood vessels, nerves, and kidneys.
In addition, it can diminish ability to heal sores, cause problems with digestion, impotence, and increase the risk of heart attack and stroke. Many of these problems can be delayed or prevented with proper treatment. At Burton’s Pharmacy, it is our priority to make sure you have the tools you need to manage your diabetes.
